My goal was to find a symbol that would be instantly recognized by Latvians and could be communicated to Americans without extended background information. I started to look for similar symbols in our cultures.
I decided to use well-known Latvian monument - "Freedom Monument". This specific tri-star arrangement is not used as an official symbol but its well known and easy to recognize. The monument symbolizes freedom and independence - just like the "Statue of Liberty" located in New York. Both of them are visually similar and communicate the same values. The idea behind the symbol is cros-cultural and reference not only Latvia and the city Riga but also the values of Latvian and American people. Small and minimalistic symbol enables to introduce the colors from the American flag to create a design that is well-rounded, flexible and easy to perceive.
The final logo is easy to read and can be used with or without text - in all sizes, on all backgrounds.
